How much SaaS product design costs, and what you get at each price

What budget you need, what changes the price, and why many teams start with a project and move to a retainer later.

The short answer

At Fackt, a product audit is free, fixed-scope projects start from $5,000 and usually take 2 to 6 weeks, and a monthly retainer is $6,900 for ongoing design, with your requests worked through one at a time.

There are no hidden fees. A retainer can be paused or cancelled any time.

Start with the goal, not the screens

The best way to set a budget is to name what the design has to change. More trial users who reach their first win. Fewer support tickets about one confusing flow. A landing page that explains the product in five seconds. A demo that makes the product look as good as it works.

A clear goal does three things. It decides the scope, because only the screens that move the goal are in. It gives everyone the same way to judge the work. And it makes the price easy to reason about, because you can weigh it against what reaching the goal is worth to you.

That is why every engagement starts with a written brief: we agree on the goal first, then design toward it.

What changes the price

Two things move the number most: scope and speed.

Scope. The number of screens and flows matters, but so does everything around them. A dashboard is not one screen: it has empty states, loading states, errors, settings and a mobile view. Redesigning a product that already works also takes more care than starting fresh, because real users already rely on it. A sharp goal is the best way to keep scope honest.

Speed. A fixed launch date is fine. A very tight one means more work happens at the same time, with less room between rounds of feedback, and that takes more design time each week.

Start with a project, move to a retainer later

Many teams prefer not to start with a retainer, and they do not need to. A fixed-scope project is the easier first step: one goal, a clearly defined scope, milestones over 2 to 6 weeks and daily design support while it runs. You see how we work and what the design does for your product, with a clear finish line.

Once that first goal is reached, the next requests usually follow: the feature after it, small fixes, marketing pages, experiments. That is when a retainer makes sense. Unlimited requests are worked one at a time with a 24h turnaround, with weekly check-ins and a dedicated Slack channel, and you can pause or cancel whenever the roadmap slows down.

Choose a project when you have one goal and want a fixed price for it.

Choose a retainer when design work never really stops and you want it to keep pace with your releases.

Not sure? Start with the free audit. Within 2 days you get a video walkthrough and a written audit of what to fix first, and that usually shows which goal to go after first.

What you get either way

Every engagement follows the same four steps:

  1. A written brief, so we agree on the goal before any design.
  2. Exploration of flows and directions.
  3. The first page designed, so you can react to something real early.
  4. The full delivered file with specs, ready for your developers.
